Vitamin play a very important role in the human and vitamin help keep us healthy and active. vitamins are organic substances that the body cannot produce in sufficient quantities and therefore must be taken through food. there are different types of vitamins. if any vitamin is lacking in the body ,various problems arise. they did not provide energy like carbohydrates, proteins or lipids. today, we will learn from this blog about the type of vitamins, there function, sources and deficiency symptoms.
What is vitamin ?
Food components other than carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that are present in very small amounts in the normal diet and help the body grow, nourish, and prevent various diseases are called vitamins. vitamin is a type of organic compound that is essential for the growth, development and prevention of disease in the body.
Function of vitamins:-
- to generate energy.
- increased immunity.
- growth and development of the body.
- helps with blood production.
- keeping various parts of the body healthy.
Vitamins are two type:-
1. fat soluble vitamins 2. water soluble vitamin
- fat soluble vitamin :- these vitamins are soluble in fat and is stored in the body. example – vitamin-A, vitamin-D, vitamin-E, vitamin-K,
- water soluble vitamin :- these vitamin are soluble in water and is not stored in the body. Example – vitamin-C, vitamin-B (complex).
Fat soluble vitamins :-
♦ Vitamin-A
Helps in the synthesis of visual pigments iodopsin (cone cell) and rhodopsin (rod cell), reduces the rate of oxidation, and helps in the formation of mucus.
- Vitamin-A helps maintain the structure of eye, skin, bones, teeth, and esophagus.
- Helps cell growth and wound healing.
- Boosts immunity.
- Source of vitamin-A :-vegetable source – carrot, spinach, pumpkin, tomato, papaya, ripe mango, orange, coriander, jack fruit, etc. Animal source – milk, egg, fish, cod liver oil, liver, curd, etc.
- Vitamin-A Deficiency – blindness, white spots on the cornea, dry skin, ect.
♦ Vitamin – D
Helps in the growth and formation of teeth and bones. helps in absorption of calcium and phosphate in the body, regulates Ca and P metabolism.
- maintains the normal structure of bones and teeth.
- Keeps muscles strong.
- Maintains calcium balance in the body.
- Source of vitamin- d :- vegetable source – mushroom, animal source – milk, egg, hilsa fish , tuna fish, butter, etc.
- Vitamin-D deficiency :- rickets, osteomalacia, etc.
♦ Vitamin -E
Helps in reproduction. in men, this vitamin helps in maintaining the nutrition and function of sperm cells. in women, it helps in maintaining the reproductive cycle and pregnancy. it also prevents the oxidation of lipids in the cell membrane.
- maintains skin, red blood cells, heart, and brain activity.
- Plays a role in reproductive health.
- source of vitamin-E :- vegetable source – cabbage, cashew, nuts, corn, sunflower oil, etc. animal source – egg,
- vitamin-E deficiency :- Hair fall. Dry and rough skin, decreased immunity. etc.
♦ Vitamin – K
This vitamin helps in blood clotting by synthesizing progranulin and some other blood clotting factors in the liver.
- stops bleeding from the cut.
- Reduces calcium deposits in blood vessels- helpful in reducing the risk of heart attack.
- Helps wounds dry quickly.
- Source of vitamin-K :- vegetable source – peas, cabbage, broccoli, etc. animal source – milk, butter, etc.
- Vitamin -K deficiency – Delayed wound healing, Excessive bleeding from a minor injury. etc.
Water soluble vitamin :-
♦ Vitamin – C
It helps in the absorption of iron from the body and the maturation of red blood cells. this vitamin plays a significant role in wound healing. this vitamin also reduce the rate of oxidation.
- Boosts immunity, Increases iron absorption in the blood.
- Keeps skin healthy, keeps teeth and gums strong.
- Source of vitamin – C :- lemon, tomatoes, guava, indian gooseberry, coriander leaves, ripe mangoes, green chilli, etc.
- Vitamin – c deficiency :- Bleeding gums, weakness and fatigue.
